The Shadow Electric

07 Jan 2012

Situated in the beautiful surrounds of the Abbotsford Convent, The Shadow Electric is Melbourne’s new and only independent open-air cinema. They are also the only cinema in Melbourne that hold a ping-pong tournament every Sunday before the show.

From Thursday to Saturday, gates open at 6pm and Sunday from 1pm with DJ’s, live music and of course loads of ping-pong tables. Opening night will be screening ‘Drive’, starring Ryan Gosling followed by ‘Auto-Luminescent’, Stanley Kubrick’s ‘Lolita’ and ‘Submarine’ (to name a few) later in the month. The cinema is open from January – April and as a part of their commitment to helping out local artists and filmmakers, they will be screening local shorts and music videos prior to the feature presentation.

The Shadow Electric not only has the location, films and local talent, but also a respect for the art of cinema; flying in a custom-made screen from the US of A and projection and sound equipment that match, if not exceed that of an indoor cinema.  In other words, as a former projectionist myself – this is an impressive set up

I went to the opening night and it was so cool! There’s even a 10 minute preview that includes thousands of fruit bats flying over the cinema! It’s amazing.
